Spring plans 2010

Spring came quickly and retreated a little bit, but that did not prevent Susan's class from planting radishes! They are starting to show in the bed closest to the building. Plans for this spring include Bridget's class planting a three sisters garden since they have been learning about Native American cultures as well as flowers for the first floor. The round bed already has Jerusalem artichokes from last fall planted by Susan's group. The third floor groups will tend to the semicircle again and are waiting to see some of their perennial herbs return!

Our garden is in the beginning stages of being planted! As you drive in, look to see what is going on or take a quick walk out front. The raspberry bushes have grown -- hopefully this summer we will have a good crop!

Dan Rundberg, father of a student at Cobblestone, led the first floor in a garden ceremony several weeks ago. Here are some pictures of that morning.

The following is from Mary, Dan's wife & Grace's mother:

Dan (and Grace)are Haudenosaunee, which means “People of the longhouse”. Another name is Iroquois (a French word translated “bark eaters”). Dan prefers Haudenosaunee:) He is Cayuga (one of the six nations within Haudenosaunee confederacy). Grace’s Cayuga name is Ohwenjadeyo which means “beautiful earth”, nurturer of all things.

Dan gave a very brief Thanksgiving address. Giving thanks to Creator for the earth, corn, beans, squash, rain, sun and all things. He played the water drum and sang Cayuga social songs.

Next School Garden Meeting

Hello Team,
A couple weeks ago we cleaned up the beds with Nikki , Christy and Barb, the only thing left to do is to cut back the raspberries (which I can do when it is not too cold in the next few days). We planted some sunchokes (Jerusalem artichokes) and daffodils in front of the school windows. The harvest fire was great!

We plan on meeting on January 12th at 2:45 in Christy's room on the first floor, this way children coming along can play and we can talk. After school care is also available if you call by 12;00.

We just got a seed donation from Abundance. Thank you Abundance Cooperative!

Thanks to all of us on the garden team, Sharon, Mary Jo and everyone else who helped make this season happen, and looking forward to starting the next one!

From Christy (first floor teacher): The weather was beautiful, our kettle of apple cider warmed over the fire and the children were dressed in capes, crowns, and gnome hats. We gave thanks to the community for the work put into the harvest, and honored the sun, rain, and wind for their contributions. Teachers and parents were dressed in their autumn finest, bedecked in leaf crowns, and we all shared a delicious meal of stone soup, cider bread, and warm cider. The lower middle grades prepared the soup, cider bread, and warm cider, I was served the stone, and we danced around the fire with folk dancer Carol Gayeski. The children participated in various activities: Chopping and sawing wood, getting their faces painted, spinning on a spinning wheel with third floor parent Lisa Gwinner, and they played with old fashioned hoola hoops and horse reins.

Our organic garden is growing by leaps and bounds. Thank you to our Cobblestone families and the Summer Camp for taking such special care of it this summer. Your care truly shows -- it is an amazing sight! Be sure to take a look at it the next time you are at the school.

Shinnecock Corn Dance

In the morning of May 13th, a Shinnecock (Native American Tribe
from Long Island) friend of Mr. Joe came to school to
teach us a traditional Shinnecock Corn Dance for our
Three Sister's Garden (corn, beans, and squash). She
also taught us a snake dance. Afterward, all of the
children helped with the garden. We dug soil, moved
mulch, planted broccoli plants and some flower seeds.

Earth Day

First of all, a special thanks to John Kiba for getting all of those leaves into our garden! And, hats off to Christy Field and Barb King for planting all of those trees and raspberry bushes last week.

We are still awaiting the delivery of lumber so our raised beds can be built. This garden will surely be a great assest to the school.

The school celebrated Earth Day today by holding a special garden blessing honoring the 4 elements and chanting, "The fire, the air, the earth, the water, return, return, return". We then went on to the business of cleaning up the yard and neighborhood with the school's annual "Trash-a-thon". All the children, parents, and teachers ended up picking up almost 600 pounds of trash!!!
